New projects ahead

Hello all, I'm sorry with my readers if I'm still unable to post the second part of the BIND configuration tutorial but during these days work is really hard and I had/have some personal issues going on and could not find the spare time to write.

I've spent the whole morning between different meetings for the startup of some training projects I'll have to follow personally and during one of these meetings I've been told the in the near future my allocation will be 90% on projects and just a mere 10% on the training side of the world, this is exciting and sad at the same time; I'm really happy to make my hands dirty once more working on projects but on the other side I simply live to learn and teach… I LOVE IT!

The first project I've been tasked with for one of the Italian police forces in which I'll have to help them startup a virtualization environment based on Linux technologies, to host other Linux virtual machines, and their integration with the Windows world starting… tomorrow! So much to do and so little time, but I'm really happy as I love integration projects, and the unique challenges they bring, a lot so I'll be really busy all the week with lot of stuff to do.

As I've already said it has been a really busy day as added to the meetings I had to "fight" migrating an oracle installation on an old, really OLD!, Linux Advanced Server 4 installation from physical machine to a virtual one… I won't mention the fact they're using GUI and using root account just to login and use another account to start applications/services, by HAND!, nor the fact the machine does not have a single security update, the only thing that I'll mention is a suggestion to any of you self proclaimed Linux/Cisco/Microsoft/Whatever self proclaimed experts out there, please DOCUMENT your work so that is possible for a poor man like me to understand what the hell you have done and it is possible to troubleshoot issues checking logs or services scripts!

This is something too often is missing and I hate it as it makes difficult, if not impossible, for the person troubleshooting this kind of stuff to find the solution to the problems the customer is facing! I've tried to update the machine, closed a few security holes and created a few scripts to start services automatically but yet I've been called so many times by the devs saying "Hey Lethe the application xyz is not working! It used to on the physical machine!" (Which I've verified and was not true by the way :P ).

On the study side of things I've been officially tasked with completing the CCEE Citrix certification and path and, drum roll, the CCEA as well! I did not have the time to write about this anyhow but I've failed the first try at the 3rd exam the one about Secure Access Gateway but my company asked me to complete the path anyway even if this time they'll pay for all the training courses I start to like Citrix as well ;) I'll keep you posted about this as well no doubt.

Once again my time is running out so I have to run again, until next remember to document your jobs the next Systems Engineer will say thank you for that.

Lethe.

Well when I wrote the post I knew very little as the customer did not say us a lot, I’ve been caught in a series of meetings just to plan this aspect. Initially they wanted to give KVM a try, but due to lack of hardware and such we were pressed to switch the focus to something as simple as vmware Server at least for now as they just need to understand what they really need… I think probably later on we’ll switch to a VMware ESX infrastructure though.

As per making your hands dirty on KVM/Xen that’s pretty easy if you have some decent hardware at your disposal, I have a Xen host on my lab so not impossible to do there is plenty of documentation out there that can help you with this.
